Yemen calls for developing Arab-EU relations

Yemen called on Wednesday for to developing Arab-European relations in the political, economic and security areas to enhance security and stability in the region and in the world as well.

The statement made by Yemen’s permanent representative to the Arab League Mohammed al-Haisami in his speech at the 3rd meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union (EU) and the Arab League gathered in Athens, on 10-11 June.

Al-Haisami talked about the developments in the Yemeni arena and the steps achieved so far within the transition process based on the GCC-brokered initiative and the national dialogue conference (NDC).

“The current efforts are focusing on carrying out the NDC’s outcomes, drafting a new constitution.”

He said that Yemen still faces many challenges, topped by the poor economy and the growing burdens on the state treasury due to the open war against terrorism, sea piracy and arm smuggling in addition to the African refugee influx into the country, who reached over 1.3 million.

Yemen is looking forward to a strong financial and political support from brotherly and friendly countries to overcome the current exceptional stage and to underpin its security and stability, al-Haisami said.

The Arab and EU Ministers confirmed that their counties will stand by Yemen and its political process and their rejection of any interference in its internal affairs, stressing the importance of maintaining Yemen’s unity and respecting its sovereignty.

They commended the NDC’s outcomes, reiterating their countries’ full support for the Yemeni people’s aspiration for freedom, democracy, social justice and comprehensive development.

They also called on the donor organizations topped by friends of Yemen group to fulfill their financial obligations to enable Yemen to address its challenges.
